Bottled Tea Sold As Health Drinks

Before you buy any product, including health drinks, always read the label, to confirm this is the product you need and you are happy with the contents of the package. If you’re on the go and do not have the time to brew a pot of tea at home, try to find a brand of bottled tea with the least added sugar.

Some contain fruit juice, but beware, because these contain a high amount of sugar, possibly to sweeten the fruit flavor.

The news is not all bad though. The level of antioxidants in bottled drinking tea may be similar to fruit and vegetables, depending on the type of tea used and how it is brewed.

There are antioxidants in bottled tea drinks that are due to more fruit flavor than the tea itself! For example, black tea flavonoids reduce the production of LDL - the "bad" cholesterol that can lead to stroke and heart attack.

It is also said to have the ability to improve the function of blood vessels within two hours of drinking just one cup!

Finding Information Online For Food Allergy Help

Parents whose children are diagnosed with a food allergy often feel confused, utterly alone and dismayed. They understand that the road ahead could be long and require a lot of lifestyle modifications.

The good news is that there are many avenues for getting food allergy help, including emergency room staff, Epi-Pen makers, ambulance drivers, CPR instructors and nurses ready to spring to action in the event of serious allergic reactions. As well, there are doctors, researchers and allergists working on long-term therapies.

In addition to the short-term emergency treatments, there are currently three long-term experimental treatments that could offer food allergy help for patients. "This is the first time that we have a number of studies going on at the same time," says Anne Munoz-Furlong, founder of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network.

"This is huge for the food allergy community. We finally can say that probably in 10 years, the landscape will look very different than it does now." For milk, peanut and egg allergies, researchers are proposing oral immunotherapy, which has patients swallowing tiny but incremental increases of the food they're allergic to, under doctor supervision, to build tolerance.

For various food allergies, a similar technique called sublingual therapy (drops containing proteins that trigger allergies placed under the tongue) is being used. Lastly, adults and kids with a shellfish, tree nut, fish or peanut allergy are being given the Food Allergy Herbal Formula-2 (FAHF-2) pill.

If you would like more comprehensive food allergy help, you can find local resources through the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (www.foodallergy.org) or the Food Allergy Initiative (www.foodallergyinitiative.org).

Here you will find support groups, food-related allergy recipes, activism events, research updates, literature downloads and methods for coping with allergy symptoms at home, school and restaurants.

Once you're armed with enough allergy information, you'll feel more prepared for dealing with whatever life throws your way.

Understanding The Effect Of Food With Child Food Allergies

Child food allergies occur when the immune system develops antibodies to proteins found in normal everyday foods. When the body comes in contact with a certain food protein, the immune system mistakenly identifies the proteins as harmful invaders.

The antibodies trigger a release of histamines into the bloodstream, which causes the allergic reaction. Currently, researchers aren't sure what exactly causes the body to develop a food intolerance.

Another one of the most prevalent child food allergies is the milk allergy. This allergy is caused by two types of protein found in milk; casein and whey. Generally, a few minutes or hours after consuming milk, the individual will begin wheezing, vomiting or will have hives.

Over time, other allergy symptoms may turn up, like loose stools, diarrhea, cramps, runny nose, watery eyes or colic (in babies). An allergy to milk is differentiated from lactose intolerance because allergies involve the immune system attacking the body.

On the other hand, a food related intolerance involves the digestive system, with other problems like bloating, gas, diarrhea and vomiting. The only way to treat milk allergies is through avoidance of dairy.

While it may seem overwhelming to deal with child food allergies at first, there are many cookbooks and websites dedicated to helping you out. For instance, the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network has a section for food allergy recipes at www.foodallergy.org/recipes.html.

You'll be able to search by breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts. You can find recipes for egg, wheat, milk, soy, peanut and tree nut allergies here. Or, if you prefer, you can also order The Food Allergy Cookbook (at www.foodallergycookbook.com), which contains over 260 allergy-free recipes.

Reducing Caffeine Intake

The effect of caffeine is to stimulate the central nervous system, getting rid of fatigue, but after the drug has run its course, it may be that you begin to feel weak and irritable by early afternoon.

This is usually the time your body has finished or nearly finished digesting the food and drink from your breakfast. Drinking more than four cups of coffee per day, means you are getting too much caffeine in your system.

You can work around this by reducing your number of cups of coffee to one cup in the morning and one cup in the afternoon.

Too much caffeine can result in feelings of extreme fatigue, nervousness and trouble falling asleep. Some people have gastrointestinal problems including nausea and difficulty digesting food

Coffee has a significant amount of acid in it and may damage the stomach lining for some people, and cause dry skin. Headaches can also be a problem. Some people eating chocolate on a daily basis also suffer headaches.

The Unpleasant Experience Of Food Contamination and Poisoning

Probably everyone has felt the effects of food contamination and poisoning at one time or another. It is a most unpleasant experience and can have a fairly large impact on your day.

In the most severe cases, individuals can become bedridden or may even require a visit to the hospital. People will be affected by this kind of contamination in different ways, depending on their body and on the type of tainted food that was consumed.

Rest is the most important thing that you can do for yourself if you have a mild case of food contamination and poisoning. Allowing your own immune system to build up again requires you to rest and drink fluids.

If the vomiting and diarrhea continues, it is important to seek medical attention. More severe cases may require hospitalization for at least one night in the emergency room to replace fluids and to get medication.

When choosing a restaurant in which to eat, it is wise to avoid certain types in order to prevent food contamination and poisoning. Fast food and cheaper restaurants may not have their cleanliness standards up to code.

Even though most restaurants now must enforce food safety standards for their employees, not all restaurants are clean and have routine inspections. Avoiding such restaurants and also not ordering seafood except in more expensive restaurants that do follow the food safety standards on a daily basis is important.

Prevention of food-borne illnesses is the key to staying healthy.

Plastics For Storage And Food Safety

For many years now people have stored food in plastic containers. Now with food safety being of great concern, the use of plastics for storage is being questioned.

With ongoing research and studies occurring more frequently about tainted food, the internet is a useful tool to find information in order to prevent food poisoning from E. coli and salmonella, or even to prevent possible illnesses that occur from the use of plastics.

Food safety on bottled water is also less defined. Because water is considered a reasonably powerful solvent, bottled water could also be at risk for having phthalates dissolved into the water.

There is much online news and discussion about this concern, and some people are adamant about never drinking from a bottled container of water. The longer water stays in a plastic container, and the more extreme the temperature changes it may have been exposed to, the higher the danger.

Most of the research that is currently being done on food safety is inclusive. Studies aren't double-blind experiments and of course double-blind experiments require human participants and that isn't always safe.

Who is doing the research is important to know and also who is funding the research, as studies can be manipulated to convince people that a product is safe.

Until more research is done on plastics and how they can affect people, it would be wise to choose to use steel or glass containers for food and water storage, and to avoid the use of plastic in the microwave.

What Do You Know About Children Food Allergies?

Children food allergies can be a terrifying ordeal for parents who notice their precious child breaking out in sudden skin rashes, throwing up after eating or having trouble breathing.

While grade school and preschool child food allergies are rarely fatal, they can cause a lot of undue suffering and require a lifetime of careful vigilance to prevent symptoms from appearing. Over the years, the number of child allergies seems to be on the rise, but some say this is due to an increased awareness and more frequent testing.

Critics say the only reason why children food allergies have "gone up" in recent years is that the general public is more aware about the possibility of food allergies in kids.

They also argue that more and more doctors are using unreliable blood tests, which work better to rule out a food allergy than to provide definitive proof of the allergy. In 2003, a report published in Pediatrics Magazine said that blood allergy tests were only half accurate.

In 2007, researchers at the John Hopkins Children's Center reported that blood allergy tests could both overestimate and underestimate the body's immune response to an allergen.

Some doctors posit that their recommendations may have inadvertently played a role in children food allergies. The American Academy of Asthma Allergy and Immunology is currently re-evaluating guidelines recommending that eggs, peanuts and shellfish not be introduced to a child's diet until age 2 or 3.

Early exposure to peanuts has shown to decrease the peanut allergy risk in 10,000 British Children (The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunolgoy, 2008).

Ongoing Studies About Food Allergies And Children

Studies about food allergies and children may have you scratching your head, wondering what these findings all mean. After all, past research said to keep children under the age of 3 away from known allergens like shellfish and peanuts.

Now it seems they're saying the opposite is best -- to expose children to these foods sooner. A third school of thought says there is no way to prevent child food allergies from developing.

If you suspect your child may have a food allergy or intolerance, then it's most important that you keep a record of your child's diet and symptoms. You may also benefit from knowing what sort of research is being done.

"Possible Link Between Obesity and Childhood Allergies," finds a study funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

This study looked at the link between food allergies and children who were obese (in the 95th percentile of the normal body mass index for their age/height). Researcher Stephanie London M.D. found that, "The rate of having a food allergy was 59% higher for obese children."

The NIEHS report added that it's especially important to combat epidemics like obesity and food allergies in children, which have been on the rise over the past few decades.

For some, with regard to food allergies and children, the problem will clear up as science improves. Long-term studies are testing whether tolerance can be built up to eradicate these food allergies.

For lifelong sufferers, food scientists are creating delicious versions of these foods, minus the molecules that cause a food allergy reaction. Also, blood tests are being developed that hope to more accurately classify an allergy, rather than just an antibody.

Preliminary Tests For Food Allergies In Children

How likely is it to overcome food allergies in children? A good question, as at least 50% of children who are allergic to cow's milk, egg, soy and wheat will outgrow their allergy by age 6.

However, kids with a walnut, cashew, almond, pistachio or peanut allergy have a 20% chance of recovery. As a parent, you're likely wondering what you can do to help your child.

Food Challenge tests are an accurate and widely accepted way of testing for food allergies in children. The only way to truly know if a child is allergic to a particular food is to have him or her ingest it.

Since there are dangers involved with this method, children should only be tested in a clinical setting, where emergency personnel are at hand. Most allergic reactions involve small skin rashes or mild tingling in the mouth, which are easily treated.

In rare cases, a child may stop breathing and encounter anaphylaxis. To perform this test, an allergy specialist gives the patient very, very small doses of the suspected allergen until gradual tolerance develops.

Despite the success of the Food Challenge when it comes to food allergies in children, many anxious parents do not want to go through the process. It seems counterintuitive to ask children to eat something that is known to be harmful to them.

However, there are many reasons to go through with the test as well. First, blood test results and skin test results are not very accurate. Another reason to perform a Food Challenge is to see if the allergy has been outgrown.

Lastly, a Food Challenge can pinpoint the precise food causing the kid food allergy. Elimination diets can take much longer to yield results. Documenting the degree of sensitivity to the food is the most precise way to uncover the child's tolerance level.

Knowing About Children With Food Allergies

About 7% of people under 18 are children with food allergies. Most children outgrow their food allergies and intolerance by age 5, but 2% of adults have endured lifelong allergies to peanuts, wheat, milk or shellfish.

Some allergies will cause a mild skin rash, runny nose, diarrhea or nausea. In more serious cases, your child may have difficulty swallowing, talking or breathing and may throw up or pass out. It is essential that you educate yourself, your child and your child's caregivers on the seriousness of child food allergies.

As a parent of children with food allergies, it is also important that you educate the child about what a kid food allergy is, what the dangers are and about treatment for food allergy reactions.

For younger kids, it's helpful to read books on the subject, such as Ask Before I Eat, Allie the Allergic Elephant, Bugabees Friends with Food Allergies, The Peanut Butter Jam and The Terrific Tale of Teddy the Tummy.

If your child is a little bit older, then you might enjoy watching the 84-minute documentary film by Kevin J. Lindenmuth, titled, "I'm Not Nuts: Living with Food Allergies." Often if you attend local support groups, you will find a number of resources to help you when discussing food allergies with your child.

If having children with food allergies is a difficult diagnosis for your family, then visit the Food Allergy Initiative website (www.faiusa.org) to find support groups in your area.

For example, the Food Allergy Support of Sacramento in California is a parent-run group that focuses on networking, peer support and food free events for kids with food allergies to meet other kids like them. The Metro DC Food Allergy Support Group holds family social events, like Halloween parties and Christmas events.

The WNY Food Allergy Connection is a volunteer community resource that provides food allergy recipes, coping tips and peer meetings. The Parents of Allergic Kids Support Group in North Carolina holds bi-monthly parent meetings and child activities.

Philadelphia's Food and Environmental Allergy Support Team holds guest speaker discussions on allergies in schools or at restaurants, as well as product suggestions, allergy testing updates, psychological effects of allergies, new allergy medication options and alternative therapies.

The Signs Of A Food Allergy

Infant food allergies most commonly occur when parents are introducing their babies to new foods. Sometimes certain proteins cause the body to make an antibody called IgE, which alerts the baby's system that a foreign invader has arrived.

For babies, ninety percent of food allergies come from milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts or almonds), fish (tuna, salmon, cod), shellfish (shrimp, lobster, crab), soy or wheat.

The American Academy of Pediatrics used to recommend that parents wait until their child reaches the age of 3, at least, to try something like peanuts because of the potential for serious allergic reactions, but recently they admitted there is no research to back up the theory that late introduction to certain foods prevents allergies. You may find, however, that it's less stressful to deal with a food allergy reaction in an older child.

The best way to cope with serious food allergies is to keep your infant away from their food trigger. Make sure babysitters, relatives, daycare workers and school officials know about their food allergy and subsequent reaction. Breastfeeding offers good protection against allergies, so it's best to breastfeed as long as you can.

When your child is old enough to understand, try reading books to him or her about asking before eating, coping with teasing from other kids and staying safe. Most communities offer resources for parents to communicate with their kids and caregivers about this topic.

At about nine or ten months, parents like to start moving their babies away from a diet consisting solely of baby food. Pediatric food allergies can be a scary thing for parents, so they sometimes hold off on introducing certain foods.

Even if there is no added food allergy risk, it is easier to manage older babies with allergies. Allergy reactions are the worst for peanuts and shellfish, so many pediatricians recommend waiting until your child is at least three years old to introduce these things.

Whole cow's milk should not be given to babies under a year of age because the proteins are too complex for the baby's stomach to digest. However, yogurt and soft cheeses are a subtler way to introduce dairy, as these products are broken down.

Honey is another substance doctors recommend holding off of on (until age 1 or 2) because it may cause a disease called infant botulism.

Taking Action To Recover From Food Addiction

Food addiction may be the result of a need for an emotional escape or lifestyle challenges. For example, you may be addicted to a type of food and when you start eating that food you cannot stop. The food controls you, rather than you control how much you will eat.

One example, is a glass of wine with your dinner. Many medical experts agree, one glass of wine with your meal is good for your health. Drinking a bottle of whisky every morning is bad for your health and you need help.

Junk food is another form of addiction, where one may eat 3 or 4 burgers with lots of chips and a high sugar soft drink for their lunch. This meal is an example of bad nutrition and if you continue to have the same lunch every day with this amount of junk food, you will soon be overweight, have many health problems and may even become another statistic in the obese epidemic.

Taking another example, you may be addicted to eating 10 jam donuts a day. To many people, this may be an extreme example, but this happens when one is addicted to one type of food. Eating this much of one type of food, to the exclusion of vegetables and other healthy food, may lead to adverse health consequences.

Your first step is to visit your local medical doctor, who may refer you to a dietitian. The dietitian will help you change your food habits and widen the range of food you eat, so you do not eat too much of the same type of food. If the dietitian cannot solve your addiction then you may need to go back to your doctor and seek the help of a mental health expert, specializing in food problems.

There are many options for recovery from food addiction. But your first step, is to take action, to get your life back and do not let food control you.

Shopping For Healthy Food Products

Healthy food is now available in many food stores, but the supply is rather limited as the prices for healthy food are a little higher and people do not wish to pay more for food.

If you look at beyond the prices and realise healthy food is actually rather cheap, when you think about the health consequences of eating food grown with chemicals like pesticides and herbicides.

Most healthy food is certified organic. Check on the label to confirm the healthy food is certified organic. If you are allergic to chemicals in food, then you need to eat organic food. If you are allergic to certain ingredients in food, like nuts and wheat then you should purchase healthy food free from these ingredients.

You should read the nutritional information on every food product before you buy, to confirm there are no ingredients in the food that will affect your health. If you are not sure, then do not buy the food product.

Though I noticed recently a new shop has opened at the mall and it is a health food store. The first time I was in there, I was there for hours, going through all the healthy food on the shelves, reading the nutritional information on the labels, talking to the staff and seeking advice to make the right choices.

This health food store, also sells organic food, even organic fruit and vegetables. The organic food is a little dearer than food in food stores, but they are rather delicious, as all the natural flavours seem to be there. The last time I ate a tomato, it tasted like rubber. I bought a few organic tomatoes and my salads and meals are now full of flavours that I did not know existed.

My daughter thinks I have developed a new zest for cooking delicious meals. But she does not know that I am making the same meals with the same recipes I have always been cooking, but using organic ingredients and healthy food products.

I now go to the health food store every few days to stock up on healthy food.

If you are allergic to wheat, then you may look at using spelt or kamut as wheat alternatives. Your main aim is to avoid adding an ingredient where there will be an adverse health reaction. This is why you will need to seek the advice of a medical doctor to confirm the diagnosis and advise you of the food ingredients to avoid.

You should then consult with a registered dietitian who can advise on the alternatives available and help you set up a diet program where you can use food allergy recipes to create delicious meals with alternative ingredients.

There may be times when you do not know if you have an allergy to a certain food ingredient. Water Filters To Drink Clean Water

There is a lot of talk and concern nowadays over the impurities that are found in drinking water. And, it seems that with each passing year even more contaminants are discovered in drinking water sources. This all points to the need to have and use water filters to clean and purify any water that is to be used for drinking or cooking.

Water filters are mainly used in removing common contaminants from regular water sources so that the water is safe to be used for drinking and for cooking uses. Standard drinking water filters are a terrific way to get your water filtered and purified because they are very affordable and also simple to use.

Even though filtering water is recommended, it also needs to be noted that not every bit of contaminants will be 100 percent filtered out.

The only real potential drawback to utilizing water filters comes up when the filters are not properly used or are used longer than is recommended by the manufacturer.

When a water filter has been used too long, the contaminated particles can be fed back into the drinking water. This problem can be avoided by simply replacing the water filter cartridge according to the manufacturer recommendations.

Safe Drinking Water Act Protects A Safe Water Supply

Are you aware of the laws and the agency that protects your cool glass of water? The EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency protects your water. Safe water is an absolute necessity and must be enforced by laws and regulations if we are to keep it that way.

Sure you can buy bottled water but you still need to know if the drinking water sources being pumped into your home are contaminated. The Safe Drinking Water Act helps to guarantee the purity in the water you drink.

The Safe Drinking Water Act came about in 1974 by the Environmental Protection Agency. It was enacted to make sure that drinking water is safe water for consumption and to help stop the widespread pollution of natural water resources. It is enforceable by the law and has two parts to the regulations. One is punishable by fines and sentences and the other is recommendations.

The Safe Drinking Water Act works in your favor. It regulates the quality of your water. One part is enforceable by law, while the second part offers guidelines. You can rest easy knowing that the United States has some of the toughest laws when it comes to safe water and it is safe to pour a glass straight from the tap.

Public Water Safety Is Regulated

Stop and think about something before you turn on the water faucet to get a drink of water. Do you know the source of your water? Is it well water or is it water provided by the city?

How much do you know about public water systems that may or may not be safe? Customers may not be routinely informed about the safety of their drinking water system so it is up to you to do the research to find the right information.

Public source water is a regulated thing. Public water systems must use the guidelines set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency's National Primary Drinking Water Regulation.

This regulation is enforceable by law and can come with stiff penalties should the EPA find out that local suppliers are not maintaining water standards. The Secondary portion of the regulation has guidelines, though not punishable by law that state how clear, tasteful and free of texture water.

It is pretty easy to forget how good we have it in the United States. For the most part we never have to worry about whether or not we have safe water to drink. Other countries do not have it as good.

Public water works in some foreign countries are non existent and as a result the water quality is less than sanitary. Think about how your water is protected the next time you pour a glass of water.
